What does DTW – Drain to Waste – Mean?

In a drain to waste system, a plant is watered when required and none of the excess nutrient solution (runoff) is reused. The runoff in a DTW system is collected, tested and properly disposed of. An example of a drain to waste system would be any potted plant with a runoff collection dish or tray positioned under the plants’ root zone.
